Ultra Sensitive, Low Friction Bearings and Precision Engineered Aluminum Impellar Make Wind Speed Indicator Possible

Nielsen-Kellerman's goal was a new hand-held anemometer less than five inches long and weighing only 1.5 ounces, yet delivering extreme accuracy. They approached Bird Precision of Waltham, MA to help in the design of an ultra sensitive, low friction jewel bearing and shaft. Bird Precision rose to the challenge, delivering super polished sapphire conical vee bearings, chosen for their ultra low coefficient of friction, which is better than 0.15 against steel. Sapphire is next to diamond in wear resistance, and was also chosen for its long life.
These bearings allow the Kestrel's precision engineered anodized aluminum impeller to register almost imperceptible breezes (0.7 MPH), yet also measure gale force winds (up to 89 MPH) with an accuracy of 3% or better. The 25 mm patented impeller is protected from damage by a sturdy fiberglass housing, but if necessary, can be replaced simply and inexpensively by the user without tools. Bird Precision's accurate bearing has provided a cost effective solution to Nielsen-Kellerman's problem with improved results.
